The construction of the Oroteanda link is being delayed due to existing difficulties in relocating the medium voltage power line that supplies the most populated area of San Miguel de Abona: Llano del Camello. This hinders the current inability to “have access to Oroteanda from the Southern Motorway (TF-1)”, as explained by the municipal government of San Miguel.
The announcement came after a recent meeting with the Government of the Canary Islands to analyse the progress of the works on the links of Las Chafiras and Oroteanda, included in the project of the third lane between San Isidro (Granadilla de Abona) and Las Américas (Arona).
The mayor of San Miguel de Abona, Arturo González, called a meeting in the municipality focused on the Las Chafiras-Oroteanda link project with the aim of continuing to monitor the progress of the work and raise the need for it to be completed as soon as possible. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure of the regional government, Francisco González; the Roads councillor of the Tenerife Council, Dámaso Arteaga, as well as various technicians from the authorities. The supra-municipal authorities “expressed their commitment that all actions in the works of the third lane can be completed by the end of the year,” reported the City Council.
The new Las Chafiras link will have the typology of an elevated roundabout above the TF-1 trunk road, which it crosses via two circular overpasses. This is a similar action to the one at the San Isidro link. The TF-65 will connect to this roundabout (the road that runs between the urban center of San Miguel de Abona and Los Abrigos, in Granadilla de Abona), as well as the two branches towards Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the two collector-distributor roads in the South direction. Traffic towards the capital will be directed through the existing branches, which will undergo a slight modification to accommodate the new roundabout. In contrast, movements towards Playa de Las Américas will be channelled through the two new collector-distributor lanes, as envisaged in the project.
As a whole, around 90% of the third lane project of the Southern Motorway between San Isidro and Playa de Las Américas corresponding to the Oroteanda-Las Chafiras link has been completed. The execution of the phase is already over two and a half years behind the 30 months envisioned in the award. The delay primarily focuses on the new Las Chafiras bridge.
The project for this work was drafted in 2014, but it was not possible to carry it out at the time due to non-compliance in the transfers from the State to Canary Islands within the framework of the road agreement. The contract to carry out the work was signed in October 2018.
