Clavijo’s Views on the Impact of Recognising Palestine on Gaza Conflict Escalation

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 28th May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canary Islands’ President, Fernando Clavijo, expressed on Tuesday his belief that Spain’s recognition of the State of Palestine could exacerbate the conflict in Gaza instead of aiding in its resolution.

Speaking to reporters, he described the ongoing war as “undesirable” and stressed the need for all stakeholders to play a role in fostering a “climate of peace and mutual understanding” on the global stage.

Clavijo voiced his concern over the “blatant human rights violations” in Gaza and emphasised his inclination towards promoting dialogue and understanding between both sides rather than taking a definitive stance in support of either party.

He emphasised that the international community is united in its dismay at the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, leaving the responsibility for diplomatic efforts in the hands of the central government, while advocating for a resolution to end the suffering of those affected.

Regarding the proposed legal amendments mandating the relocation of migrant minors to other autonomous regions, he acknowledged the complexity of the issue due to its implications on various rights. He assured that efforts are being made to finalise the draft text through a collaborative process between the legal teams of both governments.

“The urgency is clear as summer approaches and the situation with over 5,600 minors becomes increasingly challenging. I am hopeful that in the coming days we can conclude the text and decide on its form, whether a bill or a decree, to swiftly implement the necessary measures,” he explained.

Conceding that the archipelago is facing an “extremely critical situation,” he warned of the potential difficulties in caring for minors if the situation persists and more boats arrive during the summer.
