The president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, defends the performance adjusted to the norms and with “total transparency”

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Council of Tenerife has obtained a free pass to launch the contract for the management of the island’s waste, the award of which amounts to 397,475,058 euros for a period of 15 years, since the Administrative Court of Public Contracts of the The Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands has resolved to dismiss the two appeals filed by Valoriza Syocsa Inarsa and CESPA-Martínez Cano against the resolution of the concession last March.

“These resolutions put an end to the brake on the execution of a very important contract for waste management on the island, which had received two resources after its award and which the Administrative Court of the Canary Islands has resolved to reject both and agree to the hiring table “, has indicated the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín.

The president affirmed that “finally” it will be possible to work so that the island advances towards a more sustainable model in the management of waste, favoring the circular economy and attending to all the indications of the European Union.

“For the second time the Cabildo is agreed and it is shown that it has acted in accordance with the rules and with total transparency, leaving out those who, maliciously, wanted to sow doubts about the procedure and the award,” he commented in a note.

Pedro Martín also wanted to acknowledge “the rigor and excellent work of the technicians and specialists of the island service in the Sustainable Development area.”

In this way, the insular president pointed out, “the launch of the new contract is unblocked, which renews an unfavorable administrative situation for the island corporation”, because the one that was in progress had been extended since 2015 .

For his part, the insular councilor for Sustainable Development and the Fight against Climate Change, Javier Rodríguez, indicated that in this new contract “investments are foreseen both in the Environmental Complex of Tenerife and in the different transfer plants to modernize the facilities, always in order to improve yields and increase recovery percentages “.

INVESTMENTS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLEX

The counselor recalled some of the actions carried out in the current mandate, such as the removal of the 8,004 tons of out-of-use tires that were accumulating throughout the Tenerife Environmental Complex (CAT), which had a cost of 2.1 million of euros.

“In the complex, more than 8,000 tons of tires had been abandoned since 2005. This was a serious environmental and landscape damage that we have reversed,” he said.

He also referred to the work to automate the container classification and selection plant, for an amount of three million euros, in order to increase its treatment capacity and improve the efficiency in the separation of this waste.

“Since 2009 Ecoembes was warning the Cabildo de Tenerife that the capacity to treat containers should be increased because very large interannual growths are being experienced in the selective collection of the yellow container and the plant did not have capacity. We carried out an emergency work because the situation was so extreme that Ecoembes was already evaluating the possibility of starting to send containers to Gran Canaria, “he stressed.

Rodríguez Medina also referred to the start-up of the biostabilization plant, which was abandoned and closed since 2018, and which, after these works, has the capacity to compost 96,000 tons per year.
