Exclusive Bus Lane to Las Teresitas Beach in Santa Cruz Debuting Soon to Ease Traffic

Heading to Las Teresitas beach will soon become a breeze for drivers looking to enjoy a swim on weekends or holidays with favourable weather. The current issue of enduring long queues to access this popular coastal spot in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will be alleviated with the introduction of an exclusive bus lane. A joint effort between the Capital City Council, Cabildo, Ports of Tenerife and Titsa, this initiative aims to reduce congestion and improve accessibility to the beach. The pilot experience will involve the setup of a dedicated bus lane operating between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on high-traffic days, running from the dock roundabout in Cueva Bermeja to San Andrés.

This lane will be reserved for line 910 buses and emergency vehicles, leading to the removal of parking spaces along the main avenue of the fishing neighbourhood towards Las Teresitas.

In addition to introducing the exclusive lane during peak hours, there will also be an increase in bus frequency, with services departing every 8 minutes from the Interchange. Port police will be stationed at the dock roundabout and Local Police on San Andrés Avenue during busy times to prevent unauthorised access. The Cabildo’s Road Conservation team will also be on standby to reinforce or replace signage if necessary. Furthermore, a detour will be created at the roundabout at the end of the San Andrés highway for buses to deviate to join the Taganana TF highway.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez highlighted, “This collaborative initiative aims to promote the use of public transport for beach travel, enhancing bus frequencies and speed from the Interchange to Las Teresitas.”

Councilor for Mobility, Evelyn Alonso, explained, “The bus lane will start at the Dársena roundabout in the port area, merging onto the San Andrés highway (TF-11). Advance notice will be given for the lane cut, delimited by cones until the San Andrés roundabout in the Cabildo area, followed by San Andrés avenue, where parking will be eliminated.”

Emphasising the focus on improving bus flow, the councilor added, “At the end of the avenue, buses will be given priority to regulate traffic smoothly.”

President of the Port Authority, Pedro Suárez, assured, “The port fully supports this pioneering experience to enhance public transport and improve city accessibility. We are committed to collaborating and refining the project based on initial test results.”

Councilor for Mobility, Eulalia García, stated, “This measure will enhance mobility for residents and visitors in the area. Prioritising public transportation is essential.”

Implementation of a Traffic Light at Las Teresitas Beach to Regulate Traffic Flow

In addition to the exclusive bus lane project, a new traffic light will be installed to manage traffic at the exit of the 300 new parking spaces near the beach. These works, carried out by the city council, will enable vehicles to turn left towards the San Andrés exit without entering the beach’s roundabout, thus easing traffic congestion in the area. Following the installation of the traffic light, a trial period will ensure the proper functioning of this new traffic control feature at the primary local beach.
