The late Fran Domínguez, former deputy director of DIARIO DE AVISOS, will be honoured in La Orotava as a street is set to be named after him. This initiative comes from three local groups – the Pinolere Cultural Association, the Salesian Alumni Association and the Liceo Taoro Society.

During the recent plenary session, all political factions of the Corporation unanimously approved the proposal to name the stairs connecting Calvario Street at the beginning of El Puente with Parallel Rosales Street as ‘Fran Domínguez Passage’.

Dominguez, a graduate in Geography and History and Information Sciences from the University of La Laguna (ULL), dedicated most of his professional life to DIARIO DE AVISOS. He began his journey with the newspaper at the end of 1998 and served as a correspondent in the northern region of the Island, head of the Society and Culture section, coordinator of the weekly cultural supplement D’Trulenque, editor-in-chief, and deputy director in two periods until his passing.

Living in the San Antonio neighbourhood for most of his life, Domínguez’s family still resides in the ancestral home. He was a former student of Salesiano San Isidro School and was actively involved with its Basketball Club, playing as a member for several seasons.

Highly engaged in various projects concerning the municipality, Domínguez notably contributed to the Pinolere Cultural Project and participated in the magazine Cuadernos de Etnografía Canaria by the aforementioned association. Additionally, he was deeply involved in an investigative project, including a book and documentary, about the life and artistry of Domingo Codesido Ascanio, known as David Carpenter to the locals as the ‘Tarzan of La Orotava’.

Given his strong connections with the town, his exemplary character, the profound appreciation and affection he garnered from the community, his distinguished journalism career, and above all, his unwavering love for his people which he demonstrated across all aspects of his life, the Plenary approved the naming of a street in the Villa in his honour.

Furthermore, other unanimous decisions from the session included a motion from the Socialist Group to conduct a survey of municipal facilities containing asbestos, and another proposal from the PSOE regarding the implementation of a bus shuttle service. The current bus frequencies and proposed routes will be reviewed in the upcoming committee meeting to align them with the ones managed by the Cabildo, aiming to enhance mobility within the municipality.
