SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 25th May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, in collaboration with the Public Services, Strategic Planning, and Environmental Sustainability department, has given the green light for the establishment and operation of an Interdepartmental Commission focusing on Tourist Destinations, to be overseen by the Development Society.

The main aim of this commission will be to drive the municipality’s transformation into a Smart Tourist Destination by adopting a management approach grounded in governance, sustainability, accessibility, innovation, and technology.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez highlighted that this commission “serves as a nexus between various tourism-related sectors to establish network structures, enhance decision-making efficiency, and supervise the initiatives undertaken by the City Council that impact tourism.”

Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, Strategic Planning, and Environmental Sustainability, stressed the significance of having a body that “guides us in our journey towards becoming an intelligent tourist destination while sustaining levels of growth and competitiveness, all while upholding sustainability and environmental preservation.”

Carmen Pérez, the CEO of the Development Society, noted that the establishment of this commission, with representation from different City Council departments, “is a significant step for Santa Cruz, demonstrating a strong commitment to boosting tourism activity with a focus on quality standards, leveraging innovation and new technologies, and employing strategies that ensure the conservation and safeguarding of our surroundings.”

The primary goal is to drive the municipality’s tourism agenda, foster dialogue between departments, exchange knowledge on initiatives that support tourism development, and advance projects aligned with the transformation vision towards a Smart Tourist Destination.

On 23rd December 2022, Santa Cruz de Tenerife joined the Smart Tourist Destinations Network, initiated by the Secretary of State for Tourism to accelerate the transformation of Spanish tourism sites into smart destinations. This aims to promote collaboration between public and private entities in developing products, services, and actions for these destinations, all while upholding Spain’s leadership in tourism intelligence.
