The vibrant streets of Santa Cruz came alive yesterday with music, laughter, and a burst of colors as over 650 young magicians took the spotlight in the inaugural school pilgrimage parade in the capital. Amidst guitars strumming and the melodic tunes of isas and folias, Canary Island flags waving proudly, traditional attire adorning the participants. Even a quick breakfast break, complete with mouth-watering chorizo sandwiches and bananas, added to the authentic experience as the young pilgrims showcased the Canary Islands’ customs, ensuring their legacy for generations to come.
The first-ever school pilgrimage parade, a groundbreaking event organized by the Department of Education in partnership with the Autonomous Festivals Organization, placed school children at the heart of the city’s hustle and bustle, captivating both locals and tourists. The two-hour initiative saw the young participants strolling down Castillo Street before reaching La Candelaria Square, where they were treated to entertaining children’s performances on stage.
This miniature pilgrimage, sans animals or carts, saw students from schools like El Draguillo, García Escámez, Georgia Martín Hernández, Gesta 25 de Julio, La Rosa, La Salud, Las Delicias, Las Retamas, Los Dragos, Los Menceyes, Los Verodes, Rambla de Santa Cruz, Salamanca, San Andrés, Santa Cruz de California, and Villa Asención take part in the festivities.
The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, welcoming the school contingent at Plaza de La Candelaria, emphasized, “This initiative serves as a platform to celebrate the rich culture of the Canary Islands, especially during this week when we commemorate Canary Islands Day. Moreover, it aligns with the city’s May Festival celebrations, marking its significance for years to come.”
