Santa Cruz’s Response to Tarife’s Action to Deter Illegal Dumping on Streets

The Deputy Mayor and Public Services councillor of the Santa Cruz City Council, Carlos Tarife, stated that he will sit on a chair next to the containers, accompanied by a team of inspectors, to raise awareness and put an end to illegal waste disposal on public roads. The unusual measure aims to eliminate the 28 black spots identified throughout the municipality. His first stop will be at Luis Celso Guadalupe Avenue, in Añaza.

The solution proposed by the chair councillor, as he calls himself, has divided the citizens. Some applaud the measure, as long as it is carried out, while others fail to see the point. “It’s a bit exaggerated, I highly doubt he will actually go sit directly on the containers. He just said it to look good” and “I’ll believe it when I see it,” these are some of the opinions of the people of Santa Cruz.

Overall, they agree with the councillor that a solution is needed to curb waste dumping on the streets, but they are unsure if sitting on a chair is the best idea. “Since he gets paid, he should at least do it for the people.” A resident believes he should start in other areas, with higher tourist and local traffic, such as El Palmetum beach.

For most, it would be a surprise if Tarife followed through on his words. The councillor, on the other hand, remains firm in his decision to monitor the main black spots, starting with Añaza and Ofra. The measure was chosen over other proposals such as the possibility of not collecting garbage that is not placed inside containers, ultimately discarded as it would create a health problem.
