The Start of GastroCanarias with Over 217 Stalls and 90+ Companies

The 9th Gastronomic Fair of Canarias-GastroCanarias kicks off in the capital of Tenerife. The Grand Hall of the Fairground is the chosen venue for hosting the most important gastronomic fair in the Archipelago, spanning 17,000 square meters with two stages. From Tuesday to Thursday, this event will feature 217 exhibition stands and sales booths occupied by over 90 leading companies in the Canarian, Peninsular, and international sectors. The Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, declares it to be “one of the top three gastronomic fair events in Spain”.

The Eastern Islands will also have a notable presence. This year La Graciosa holds a special place as the “Guest Island”. The products, recipes, cuisine, flavours, and professionals from the island take the spotlight in the inaugural culinary demonstration (showcooking). The President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, emphasizes that “La Graciosa contributes significantly to the gross domestic product of Canarias and, in terms of gastronomy, has a lot to say about salt culture and the fishing sector. The agricultural and livestock sector of La Graciosa must be promoted”.

Organized by the Institution Fair, it has the institutional support and sponsorship of the Government of Canarias. The opening ceremony will be held this Tuesday (10:30) along with the 18th Canary Islands Cooking Championship, beginning at 11:00 with the winner not being revealed until 20:00. The secret ingredient is fresh hake from La Graciosa, provided by the El Corte Inglés supermarket. La Graciosa’s culinary demonstration starts at 11:30; the Absolute Pizza Championship at 13:00 (prizes will be awarded at 19:30), and the Canary Islands Cooking Championship at 15:30. All this, interspersed with various workshops.

Joining the fair are municipalities like Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Miguel de Abona, and Los Realejos. The capital will promote the city’s gastronomy through Degusta Santa Cruz-Anaga Smart Destination, featuring culinary demonstrations and networking hubs with producers, seven talks, and three roundtable discussions. The activities aim to address various gastronomic perspectives, from healthy food with unique flavours to tradition versus innovation or mixology. The CEO of the Development Society, Carmen Pérez, underscores that the talks will focus on promoting zero-kilometre products, local ingredients that “not only enrich our recipes but also our lives and our community”.

The Mayor of Los Realejos, Adolfo González, also highlights local products like cheeses, gofio, wines, traditional pastries, and potatoes. From his municipality, he states, “once again, the best proposals from Los Realejos will be offered for the most discerning palates”.

The southern municipality of San Miguel de Abona also shares and promotes through their stoves. Ten establishments from the municipality will participate in the fair, including cheese shops, sweet shops, bakeries, and restaurants; each with their own uniqueness and specialisation in cuisine.
