After the departure of councilor Natalia Afonso (PSOE) in March, Marco González, Mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, will be in charge of the Treasury, in addition to his previous responsibilities. Natalia Afonso was previously responsible for Economic Development, Equality, Heritage, and Personnel Management.
The reshuffling caused by the resignation will involve minimal changes in the municipal organization. Only the duties previously held by Natalia Afonso will be reassigned, while the responsibilities overseen by the two Portuense Citizen Assembly (ACP) councilors will remain unchanged.
Jesús Reverón, councilor for Sociocultural Services and Innovation, will now oversee Human Resources in addition to his initial role; Rebeca Toste will now be responsible for Equality; Flora Perera will assume the role of first deputy mayor; and Reina Rodríguez Méndez, the most recent councilor, will manage Commerce and Sociocultural Services.
In his capacity as top leader, responsible for Cultural Action, Security, and Portuense Identity, González aims to achieve financial stability as a key goal for the municipality. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining the health of the municipal treasury and avoiding unnecessary debt accumulation. He plans to achieve this by updating and approving existing ordinances.
González stresses the collective effort required from the citizens of Puerto in achieving financial balance. He highlights the need for regulatory measures and ordinance updates, such as those concerning taxi and bus fares, cemetery regulations, and other relevant policies. He acknowledges that addressing financial issues may entail political challenges but is committed to the necessary steps for financial sustainability.
While acknowledging the technical nature of financial management, González emphasises the importance of political insight and experience in navigating such responsibilities. He believes that while training is valuable, practical experience can also lead to effective governance. Despite the inherent risks, González is confident in his knowledge of financial policies and the support he receives from administrative experts.
