Police Leadership Disputes Headed to Court

The Police Chief’s union is considering legal action against the mayor and the councilwoman for possible misconduct. This is indicated in a statement, which adds that the lawyers representing Gabriel Medina will “pursue through the courts everything to which he is entitled and the personal and family damages caused by his dismissal.”

«The leadership of the Local Police of Tacoronte continues to be exercised provisionally as it has been for the past seven years, but without the model approved by the mayor earlier this year, which established a rotation procedure where, every five months, a different officer would be appointed as the head», states the press release.

The statement further adds that the formula chosen by the municipal leader was implemented “following the sudden dismissal of the previous head of the local police force, Gabriel Medina, who was removed under the pretext by Sandra Izquierdo (PSOE) of wanting to address an irregularity, for which she established a shift with which Medina was to alternate the position with another officer, who is currently the partner of the first deputy mayor, Noemí García (CC)”. It continues: “And whose appointment was annulled a few days ago by municipal technical services”.

«The technical report has upheld the appeal filed by Medina and states that the legal considerations presented have been taken into account, annulling the dismissal and appointments decrees made, and reverting the actions to the moment before their issuance», adds the statement.

In this way, the individual who had been in charge of the leadership for seven years “has returned to his position, and the union that has been defending him, as well as his team of lawyers, have already indicated that they are studying the possible illegalities committed in this process, as well as the consequences of the attacks”.

On the other hand, the Tacoronte Government argues that the actions regarding the Local Police are “constantly supported by favourable technical reports”. The local government emphasizes that it will “continue to work in accordance with the law to ensure the best service to the citizens by 20th May 2024”.

The press release adds that “the Tacoronte Government, led by the city’s mayor, Sandra Izquierdo, defends the model approved months ago for the leadership of the Local Police force, established to create equality of conditions through the rotation of the acting chief officer position for five-month periods. The process promoted by the local government had the technical support of the City Council through favourable reports all along.”
