SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 20th May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

This Friday, the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands will present the Viera and Clavijo 2023 awards, commencing at 12:00 p.m. at the House of Culture in the municipality of Los Realejos, Tenerife.

The most prestigious recognition bestowed by this department on educational work in the non-university sector of the archipelago honours teachers who have distinguished themselves through exemplary dedication, exceptional personal achievements, and the realisation of participation, equity, and quality objectives in the educational system of the islands. It also rewards educational institutions that have demonstrated innovation, excellence in practices, and projects related to Canarian subjects.

This year, the laureates comprise seven educators, categorised into three distinct groups, and three educational facilities, as detailed in a Ministry statement.

Among the distinguished recipients of the Viera and Clavijo awards for their teaching endeavours are Cristina Blanco Sánchez, the principal of the Cairasco de Figueroa Secondary Education Institute (IES) in Gran Canaria; Julián Fariña Rodríguez, the head of the Integrated Vocational Training Center (CIFP) Virgen de Candelaria in Tenerife; and Pedro Rodríguez Rodríguez, a teacher and technician in the General Directorate of Education Planning, Inclusion, and Innovation of the Canary Islands Government, who has recently retired.

The outstanding professional contribution and career of María Isabel Pérez González, who served as a professor for almost four decades at the IES Bañaderos-Cipriano Acosta in Gran Canaria until her retirement at the end of the 2022/23 academic year, have also been acknowledged, alongside a posthumous recognition for Pascual Molina Barreto, who was employed at the IES Doctor Antonio González González in Tenerife.

Manuel García Déniz and Rafael Curbelo Armas, both retired and natives of Lanzarote, have been honoured for their significant roles in achieving educational goals, as a teacher and inspector respectively.

The educational institutions distinguished in the 2023 edition for their outstanding innovations, best practices, and projects connected to Canarian themes are CEIP Puntagorda in La Palma and Gran Canaria, situated on the island with the same name, as well as IES La Labor of La Laguna in Tenerife.
