Isla Solidarity promotes selfless deeds of employees in the private sector

The III Insular Corporate Volunteer Week brings together, from next Monday until the 26th, entities from the third sector, NGOs, with the business world through the selfless actions of their workers. The mediation that completes the triangle of those involved corresponds to the Social Action area of the Tenerife Council, with the prominence of its subsidiary entity, Sinpromi, and the programme Tenerife Solidaria, which celebrates 27 years this year.

Island councillor Águeda Fumero presented the initiative yesterday alongside Sinpromi CEO Adal García and programme manager Beatriz Sicilia. Fumero announced that the forum has the participation of 35 entities and 21 companies, which have already previously generated 41 alliances after the celebration, last week, of a working day where they were able to make contact and establish lines of collaboration, always with a social objective as a common factor. This working day led to a programme of collaborative activities that during the Insular Week will translate into 900 hours of volunteering in different areas.

Águeda Fumero emphasized: “I always say that a revolution in social management is necessary, for which the participation and involvement of all agents based on alliances that allow needs to be effectively and swiftly met.” Fumero thanked the participating entities “for their commitment to volunteering” and, especially, “the example they set, which inspires many, by creating a fundamental chain of solidarity from the perspective of collaborative and coordinated work between the public administration and private entities.”

In turn, Adal García stated, “Corporate volunteering is a valuable tool for managing human capital in organisations.” He added that “it helps increase the sense of belonging of employees with their company and makes employees feel more connected to the social purpose and identity of the organisation to which they belong.”

Finally, Beatriz Sicilia explained the process carried out in the organization of this Week, which had its precursor in the celebration of the V Corporate Volunteering Networking Marathon, enabling direct contact between companies and third sector entities.

A “broad and intense” work

Councillor Fumero (PP) took the opportunity to highlight the “broad and intense” work carried out by her team. For example, the commitment to participation for intercultural coexistence through the Juntas en la Misma Dirección strategy. Or in supporting with 1.8 million Euros to entities distributing basic necessities, mostly food, to the most vulnerable and needy.

Fumero considered policies towards people with disabilities and the promotion of their job inclusion as “a strategic line of the mandate.” The purpose was the visit this week by the councillor to the Los Verodes Occupational Centre in La Laguna, which provides care to 60 users with intellectual disabilities. The goal is to improve their level of personal autonomy, as well as to assist families and caregivers by providing respite and allowing them to stay at home. The resource offers occupational therapy activities, pre-employment skills, and psychosocial enablement for individuals with difficulties integrating into a special employment centre or ordinary employment.
