On Thursday, the President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, held a meeting with the President of the Red Cross in the region, Mayte Pociello, and the Provincial President in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Heliodoro González. They discussed the upcoming organization of an exhibition in June, marking the 150th anniversary of the Red Cross in the archipelago, to be held in the exhibition hall of the Chamber.
Astrid Pérez stated, “The Canary Islands Parliament is delighted to offer our premises for a wider audience to discover the photographic exhibition ‘150 Years of Humanitarian Action in the Canary Islands’, which showcases the charitable journey of this organization since its inception in Las Palmas of Gran Canaria on 1st April, 1874. Over a century and a half of dedicated work with the most vulnerable individuals deserves our utmost attention and support.”
Pociello highlighted, “The year 2024 holds special significance for the Red Cross in the Canary Islands, marking 150 years since its establishment in the region.”
In order to commemorate this milestone, various activities and awareness campaigns are being arranged to educate society about the organization’s “extensive history” of humanitarian efforts in the region. This is also a moment to appreciate and acknowledge the significant contributions of all those who have played a part, directly or indirectly, in enabling the Red Cross’s operations in the Canary Islands.
The mobile photographic exhibition ‘150 Years of Humanitarian Action in the Canary Islands’ will showcase the historical journey of the organization through eight totems, each with three sides telling the story of its progress and displaying some of the most impactful images from its history.
The exhibition is scheduled to be set up at the Canary Islands Parliament in late June.
