A bus stop with a pavement, canopy, a bench, lighting, and even a trash bin. What should be normal, right? That’s how one of the most dangerous laybys on the Island has been left after a project by the Tenerife Island Council, located at the junction of La Villa Shopping Centre, on the right-hand side of the TF-5, specifically at kilometre point 36+600.
The Mobility councillor, Eulalia García, explains that “due to the lack of an adequate waiting area at the stop to meet the demand it faces (more than 30 daily boardings), as well as the necessary equipment to make the user’s wait more comfortable and safe.”
Thus, furniture such as seats, backrests, and a canopy has been installed in the area. But according to the island councillor, the “need to act at the stopping point was also identified, in order to improve its safety and accessibility and be able to provide an adequate service to public transport users and maintain the pedestrian flow that passes through it.”
The works, which have involved an investment of over 13,000 Euros, have been carried out on the pavement and at the layby and have consisted of raising the pavement to create the necessary space to adapt an appropriate waiting area to the existing demand and install a canopy and the rest of the necessary furniture (bench, backrest, trash bin, courtesy lighting).
The intervention has been complemented by the placement of a tactile alert strip attached to the length of the curbs, following the basic accessibility criteria for people with disabilities.
