The Canary Islands’ government has reconfirmed its determination to file an appeal with the Constitutional Court (TC) to address the ongoing dispute with the State Government concerning the extent of coastal authorities transferred to the autonomous community.
During a press briefing following the Government Council meeting, Alfonso Cabello, the vice-counselor of the Presidency and spokesperson for the Canary Islands Executive, stated that there is no set date for a new bilateral commission and highlighted that, despite the willingness of both parties to continue discussions, “the actual circumstances indicate that a decision by the Council of Ministers has positioned itself against the interests of the Canary Islands.”
Consequently, he reiterated that the regional government remains committed to filing an appeal with the Constitutional Court in the upcoming days; however, concurrently, “all necessary dialogues can be carried out to achieve a favourable resolution,” although emphasizing that the Canarian executive will persist in defending exclusive and distinctive powers concerning costs that are deemed “non-negotiable.”
