Hansi González de Chaves, the Tenerife resident who became severely ill during a trip to Mexico to visit a daughter, passed away this Sunday. As confirmed by family sources, Hansi González lost his life on May 12th, at 15:30, at the Metropolitano Hospital in Monterrey due to a cardiac arrest.

His family had issued an SOS from the Central American country to request urgent help. Hansi and his wife, Carolina Martinez, travelled on March 14 from Tenerife to Mexico to visit one of their daughters. A health setback turned the visit into a nightmare: he was admitted to a private hospital and the bill for fifteen days of treatment soared above 90,000 Euros.

The islander unfortunately could not overcome his health problems. After confirming the passing, Carolina Martinez described her husband as “my companion for over 35 years, the best father to my daughters, and the love of my life.”

The family currently in Mexico is preparing all the documentation to have him cremated and brought back to Tenerife along with their daughter. “Unfortunately, this is not how we envisioned coming back,” Carolina Martinez added.

Hansi González’s wife wanted to publicly express her gratitude “to all the institutions, media, and everyone who has shown interest in his health condition and has supported and encouraged me during these sad weeks.”

Hansi González de Chaves resided in La Orotava, although he also had strong ties to Puerto de la Cruz. He was known in Puerto, among other reasons, for having been in charge of the Taoro Casino.

The family has experienced these past days. The details of what happened were shared by their daughter, residing in Mexico, through a Gofundme crowdfunding initiative to raise funds. This initiative entitled Help with the treatment and medication costs of my father. “I am his daughter María Victoria and currently reside in the city of Monterrey (Mexico), where, after a year of not seeing them, my parents decided to come and visit me, with their trip planned from March 14th to April 25th,” the daughter begins.

“Following the 20 days in the private hospital, we had to settle a bill exceeding 90,000 Euros”, Hansi González’s family disclosed.

Institutions from the Canary Islands and the Spanish government got involved upon learning of the situation to try to find a solution. They were in that process when his health worsened. Unfortunately, Hansi González could not recover.
