Expansion of Guajara de Fasnia School with the Building of Three Classrooms

The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands is carrying out the expansion of the Guajara Compulsory Education Centre (CEO) in the urban area of Fasnia. This responds to the demands of the educational community in the municipality with the construction of three classrooms, a project expected to be completed before the end of this year.

With a cost exceeding 300,000 Euros and a seven-month execution period, the project named Second-Floor Expansion of Three Classrooms aims to address the needs of the increasing number of enrolled students. In the 2007-2008 school year, the number of registered students was 125, while in the 2019-2020 academic year, it started with 303 students, a figure that continues to rise.

The division of classrooms and the need for splitting classes in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) has led to “having to give classes in patios and the dining hall,” stated the educational community to the ministry. “Since 2018, we have been requesting the construction of the upper classrooms in the Infant module.”

The management of CEO Guajara expressed their satisfaction to the municipality for the initiation of this project. “We continue to grow and improve our facilities, designing the classrooms of the future; technological, adapted to new methodologies, modern, and full of light,” as shared on social media accounts.

Additionally, they pointed out other benefits of this intervention by stating, “this module, which will be completed with these spaces, will be connected to the rest of the centre’s buildings through the pathway that will start to be built in a few months. This way, we will have the entire centre connected by ramps and prepared for the community’s motor needs whenever necessary.”

The state of educational infrastructure in the southern part of the island remains an unresolved issue. Last March, the Education Ministry launched the tender for the drafting of the project for the new San Isidro Compulsory Education Centre (CEO) in Granadilla de Abona. It will also include the school in Abades (Arico), the Las Chafiras Secondary School (San Miguel de Abona) and the Adeje Integrated Vocational Training Centre (CIFP), in addition to the expansion of CEO Andrés Orozco (Arafo), Magallanes and El Médano High Schools (Granadilla de Abona), Ichasagua and Los Cristianos (Arona), and Serafín Pardo (Santiago del Teide), Abona Infant and Primary Education Centre (Granadilla de Abona) and the Arona Secondary Education Institute (SIES) Section.
