With rainfall levels only reaching 27% of expected amounts, the water emergency in Tenerife is becoming increasingly urgent. Loro Parque, identified by the Insular Water Council (CIATF) as one of the companies involved in the measures to tackle this issue, announced yesterday, through its legal representative, Jaime Rodríguez Cíe, its commitment to supporting these initiatives by offering its capacity to produce fresh water for the Canarian Community.
“Loro Parque is ready, as always, to contribute its resources to assist our community, in line with the directives of the Insular Water Council,” emphasized Rodríguez Cíe.
The measures mentioned were recently released by the Island Council to address the critical water situation, which has led to restrictions in various municipalities in Tenerife and followed established protocols for public awareness.
One of these measures involves companies like Loro Parque being asked to make their unused facilities available for distribution by CIATF to areas facing water shortages. This would involve utilising a portion of Loro Parque’s desalination capacity to produce fresh water for public use in its osmosis plant.
Loro Parque is recognised for its commitment to sustainability, particularly in water and energy usage. Since 2010, it has pursued a policy of aquifer self-sufficiency by desalinating seawater. This process is conducted under public authorization that regulates and monitors the volume of seawater treated at its facilities. The produced water covers the park’s internal needs and is also used by visitors.
Jaime Rodríguez affirms that Loro Parque’s dedication to the Canary Islands community remains resolute and sees these measures as an opportunity to contribute its capabilities to fulfil community requirements. He highlights the need for the infrastructure essential to facilitate the transfer of water from Loro Parque to the public network.
“We have initiated discussions with CIATF members to seek solutions and establish the implementation process, offering our assistance to the public,” he confirmed.
The legal manager of the group stresses Loro Parque’s genuine commitment to Tenerife, evident in its past collaborations, such as providing assistance during last year’s wildfires through logistical and human support, as well as contributing to reforestation efforts by donating to related initiatives.
