SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 10th May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
An Order has been published by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge in the Official State Gazette (BOE) this Friday to ensure the electricity supply on the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura, covering the current shortfall with an additional 155.2 megawatts (MW).
This translates to 50.8 MW set for Gran Canaria, 71.6 MW for Tenerife, and 32.8 MW for Fuerteventura; figures that fall short of the forecasts by Red Eléctrica which had estimated a demand of 268 MW, broken down to 138 MW in Gran Canaria, 80 MW in Tenerife, and 50 MW in Fuerteventura.
These measures are mandated for a minimum of three years, with the possibility of extension in case of ongoing electricity generation challenges. The costs will be factored into the compensation of production activities in non-peninsular territories.
The emergency units installed under this authorization cannot replace other available units unless deemed essential by the system operator to avert supply risks, as highlighted in the ministerial order.
The ministry will ensure compliance with the order’s requirements and will approve the final installation costs for these generating units.
Operating expenses will vary based on production hours, subject to auditing. The National Markets and Competition Commission will handle settlements as part of its regulatory functions.
