SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 10th May (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of the Canary Islands will bestow the Collar of the Order ‘Canary Islands’ upon the ‘natural born’ members, namely, the presidents and former presidents of the regional Executive, the Parliament of the Canary Islands, and the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC). The decree, signed by President Fernando Clavijo, was published today, Friday, in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC).
The Order of the ‘Canary Islands’ Collar is the most prestigious honour granted by the Government, acknowledging the exceptional services provided to the Canary Islands or its inhabitants, as well as their contributions to strengthening friendships and cooperation between the Canary Islands and the national and international communities.
The Collar represents one of the ranks within the Order ‘Canary Islands’, along with the Grand Cross and Cross. The Collar title is automatically granted to the presidents and former presidents of the Canary Islands, the Parliament of the Canary Islands, and the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands. Its most recent conferral upon ex-officio members was in 2002 by former President Román Rodríguez.
This recognition may also be extended to individuals who have held or currently hold positions in international organisations, states, autonomous communities or regions, or nationalities with a comparable institutional status to recipients of significant international decorations or awards. The last posthumous bestowal of the Order of the ‘Canary Islands’ Collar was to former Spanish Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez in 2014.
According to the decree, the Collar of the Order ‘Canary Islands’ has been awarded to former Presidents of the Canary Islands such as Adán Martín (2003-2007, posthumously), Paulino Rivero (2007-2015), and Ángel Víctor Torres (2019-2023); to current President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo (2015-2019//2023); former Presidents of the Parliament of the Canary Islands including Gabriel Mato (2003-2007), Antonio Castro (2007-2015), Carolina Darias (2015-2019), Gustavo Matos (2019-2023), and the incumbent President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez (2023).
Likewise, it will also be presented to former Presidents of the highest judicial body in the Autonomous Community, the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC), namely Antonio Castro Feliciano (2005-2013), José Ramón Navarro Miranda (2013-2014), Antonio Doreste Armas (2014-2020), and current TSJC President, Juan Luis Lorenzo Bragado (2021).
The official ceremony for the awarding of the Collar of the Order ‘Canary Islands’ will be overseen by Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo and is scheduled to take place on Friday, 17th May, at the Headquarters of the Government Presidency in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
