Yesterday, the Canary Islands Parliament rejected a Non-Law Proposition from the PSOE, urging the Government to continue the land purchase process of La Tejita in Granadilla de Abona. The vote, led by the quadripartite groups along with Vox, aimed to halt the construction of a hotel and protect the Montaña Roja Special Natural Reserve.
Representative Patricia Hernández emphasised the need to make a definitive decision on whether to stop the works and restore the area to the citizens. She highlighted the public demand for work cessation and reminded that negotiations for the land purchase began in 2022 with budget allocations.
Patricia Hernández accused CC of politicising the issue unnecessarily and called out the President of the Government for misleading statements regarding construction licenses. She expressed her frustration, stating, “Mr. Clavijo either lied or was misinformed by his advisor, Mr. Regalado, who issued the construction permits.”
Deputy Miguel Martín Fumero (CC) deemed the PNL opportunistic and populist, criticising the actions of Granadilla’s mayor, Jennifer Miranda, in handling tax matters related to the Socialist Party. Popular deputy Jennifer Curbelo questioned the PSOE’s stance on La Tejita while supporting a hotel project in Adeje Cove, 30km away.
The spokesman for the Mixed Group, Raúl Acosta (AHI), stressed the need to explore ethical, aesthetic, and legal alternatives before acquiring the land for the hotel. He cautioned against setting a dangerous precedent by reversing previously granted authorisations using public funds.
Jesús Ramos Chinea, from the Gomera Socialist Group (ASG), echoed the need for dialogue amongst involved administrations and developers to rectify past urban planning mistakes without burdening the public purse. He advocated for reaching agreements through dialogue.
Vox spokesperson, Nicasio Galván, maintained that if the necessary licenses are in place for the La Tejita hotel construction, the matter should be considered closed to prevent legal uncertainties and deter private investments.
Natalia Santana from the Nueva Canarias Group-Bloque Canarista supported the PSOE’s PNL, recalling past negotiations to purchase the land for 25 million euros. She justified the acquisition based on the hotel’s location and the social concerns surrounding a protected area.
