Yesterday, the Carrera por la Vida Foundation inaugurated the new Pink Room, with the presence of its president, Brigitte Gypen; the mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, and the Councilor for Social Action of the Cabildo, Águeda Fumero. This space serves as a meeting and support area for women and families affected by breast cancer.
The Adeje City Council provided this new space in response to the significant growth of the foundation in recent years. The old headquarters, just two blocks away, had become inadequate and cramped. The Pink Room features a spacious hall where the Foundation plans to hold activities such as yoga and Pilates classes. On one side is the Foundation’s office, while the other side houses adapted bathrooms and functional rooms for women battling the disease.
Assistance with Supplies
Among the services offered by the Foundation are wigs and specially adapted bras. “Many women lose one or both breasts, so at Carrera por la Vida, we have set up a room for them to try on our bras, which we provide to those in need. Each person receives two bras, one in a skin tone and the other in black. Considering that bras can cost up to 70 Euros, we believe this support is invaluable,” remarked the president.
Brigitte herself was diagnosed with breast cancer 19 years ago, an experience that made her realise the lack of resources and support for individuals facing the same challenge. “At the age of 40, I felt lost and helpless after my diagnosis. Overcoming it helped me introspect and understand my body better,” she shared.
A Whiff of Hope
The Adeje mayor, a crucial figure in driving this initiative, emphasised the importance of such resources for the municipality and the southern region. He highlighted the significance of having accessible support for those affected. “This new Sala Rosa symbolises solidarity, diversity, and progress. It exudes a sense of hope and vitality,” described the councilor, praising the premises for being more spacious, well-lit, and offering additional rooms. Rodríguez Fraga also acknowledged the dedicated work of the Carrera por la Vida Foundation volunteers, expressing gratitude for their efforts.
Gypen announced that the nineteenth edition of the Race for Life will take place on December 1. This date will be marked on the calendars of many citizens from the South and beyond.
The Foundation’s president commended the volunteers for their tireless efforts, describing them as exceptional individuals who attend to every detail day and night. She also characterised the new room, significantly larger than the previous ones, as a space filled with tearful moments, laughter, and countless personal stories.
Councilor Águeda Fumero applauded the implementation of such initiatives, expressing pride in witnessing the ongoing progress of this impactful project led by Brigitte and the dedicated volunteers.
