SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 7th May (EUROPA PRESS) –

Lola Padrón, the former mayor of Puerto de la Cruz and ex-regional representative, has been named as a member of Parliament on Tuesday, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the archipelago, taking over from Rafael Yanes.

Padrón, who had previously received the endorsement of suitability from the Government Commission on the Interior, Justice, Equality, and Diversity, secured 52 votes in favour with four abstentions.

Additionally, Noelia García also received the backing of the parliamentary session to assume the role of the first Transparency Commissioner, succeeding Daniel Cerdán, the previous incumbent since its establishment.

According to the Chamber’s President, Astrid Pérez, the Parliamentary Plenary approved “two historic appointments” on Tuesday, marking the election of two women for the first time to lead the Common Council and the Transparency Commissioner.

The deputies also approved the proposed candidates for the renewal of the Consultative Council of the Canary Islands and the Audience of Accounts, except for José Juan Suay Rincón, who did not garner enough votes for his appointment.

Prior to commencing the voting process for the renewal of leadership positions within institutions linked to the Parliament of the Canary Islands, the Chamber’s President expressed “words of recognition and affection for three individuals who have made significant contributions to the Diputación del Común, the Advisory Council, and the Transparency Commissioner,” in reference to Rafael Yanes, Pablo Matos, and Daniel Cerdán.

“Their efforts have been vital in safeguarding the democratic well-being of our Community, and in advocating for the legitimate interests of citizens and institutions,” emphasised Astrid Pérez.

The President also extended best wishes and success to those continuing in their roles, such as Pedro Pacheco, and those preparing to assume leadership roles in “these crucial institutions for the Autonomous Community and its residents.”

Julio Pérez Hernández, Francisca Luengo Orol, María Cristina de León Marrero, and Carlos de Millán Hernández were elected by the majority of the parliamentary session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands to join the Consultative Council of the Canary Islands.

The Plenary also endorsed the members of the Audience of Accounts of the Canary Islands: Pedro Pacheco González, Luis Ángel Ibarra Betancort, Almudena Estévez Estévez, Verónica Domínguez Santana, and José Tomás Estalella Limiñana.

Following the selection of the candidates proposed in the respective commissions, conducted in April, the formal handover of leadership positions in the significant statutory bodies will take place during the scheduled inaugurations later this month in May.
