The Environmental Group (GRUME) of the Canarian Police has launched a campaign to monitor, detect illegal trade and trafficking of species in establishments dedicated to animal sales in Gran Canaria and tracking their online offerings, detecting the illegal sale of 32 pigeons in Gáldar.
In a statement, the police force explained that the legal origin of these specimens was not accredited, as they had been captured by the owner of the premises.
During the inspection, it was noted that the owner lacked the corresponding authorization to capture the birds.
In this case, he used an octagonal trap cage, which he placed on the roof of his house and offered for sale the captured specimens without conducting any veterinary checks to verify that the pigeons were not carriers of any disease.

Likewise, the agents noticed that one of the birds was ringed as it was a carrier pigeon specimen. After verifying that the specimen belonged to a pigeon racing club in Tenerife, they proceeded to confiscate it to personally deliver it to the President of the Insular Pigeon Racing Federation of Gran Canaria who then made the necessary arrangements to return the bird to its rightful owner.
The remaining 31 pigeon specimens were left in deposit at the establishment awaiting the resolution of the sanctioning procedure by the competent authority.
