Commencement of the Adeje-Arona Outfall Enhancements Backed by a €4.1 Million Investment

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 30th April –

The Tenerife Island Water Council, under the leadership of the Cabildo of Tenerife, has inaugurated the enhancements to extend the Adeje-Arona underwater outfall. This conduit is responsible for expelling brackish waters from the Adeje-Arona regional desalination plant (EDAM) into the sea.

The enhancements are backed by a €4.1 million investment and involve ensuring a controlled discharge of the brackish waters from EDAM Adeje-Arona to the final segment of the Barranco de Troya, thereby allowing them to reach the sea.

The primary goal of these works is to enhance the disposal process of brackish waters into the sea further away from the coast. This will be achieved by extending the outfall by 200 metres, positioning it 1,100 meters from the coastline, and ensuring that the discharge point is over 40 meters deep.

Safety measures will be implemented at the site, along with restrictions on access to the Barranco de Troya mouth and its vicinity, as indicated by the Cabildo.

The expected timeline for completion is around one and a half months, subject to sea and wave conditions.

The tasks involved are intricate as they will be carried out at a depth of 40 metres and necessitate the realignment of the underwater outfall to achieve the desired extension.

This enhancement will lead to a more efficient disposal of brackish waters from the regional desalination plant post-treatment and regeneration, making them suitable for agricultural purposes.

Consequently, due to the realignment of the outfall for the project, both water and brackish waters from the EDAM will be directed to the Barranco de Troya’s last section for disposal.

The enhancement project for the Adeje-Arona underwater outfall includes linking the two pipelines – the current one and the new addition. This necessitates the construction of a connector piece to enable the outfall to expel brackish waters over a kilometer away from the coastline.
