It seems like a simple question with a straightforward answer, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. User X (previously known as Twitter) @CharlesTroupin had the brilliant idea to ask: “How far is it between Tenerife and Gran Canaria?”, sparking a thread of tweets where he not only provides the result but also explains how he carried out the calculations.

To start off, @CharlesTroupin explains that to perform the operations, “one needs to have the coordinates of the coasts”, “calculate the distance between all pairs of positions”, and “identify the minimum distance”.

📏🌍🇮🇨How far apart are Tenerife and Gran Canaria? And how many km is it between Tenerife and La Palma?
Another thread that couldn’t be completed: today we talk about distances between islands (Canary Islands). pic.twitter.com/klKevDnbD7

Thus, between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the distance is 57.6 kilometers between the closest points of both islands: Faro de Punta Sardina (in Gran Canaria) and the tip of Antequera (in Tenerife).

However, he didn’t stop at just resolving that question and also calculated the distances between Tenerife and La Palma; Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, among others.
