Groups associated with the demonstrations of April 20th have initiated a collection of proposals to press for a transformation in the economic and social paradigm that enhances citizens’ quality of life, respects the environment, and prioritises life, pushing for the Government of the Canary Islands to launch a negotiating platform.
In a statement, they highlight that the success of the 20A mobilisations, titled ‘The Canary Islands have a limit’, underscores “the immediate need to keep progressing and instigate a participatory initiative, ‘Canarias Palante’, in which to gather suggestions to drive that crucial paradigm shift.”
The groups have revealed their decision to foster a participatory process, commencing with a form to gather all the initiatives that citizens propose in order to enhance the conditions in the Canary Islands, as “the most effective way to achieve success is by working together.” This initial step marks the beginning of a strategy aiming to outline a route that directs the negotiation of this paradigm shift both on the streets and within institutional environments, as the groups include.
On one front, they will call for the immediate establishment of a negotiation forum with the appropriate authorities, bringing in representatives from the groups who will convey the suggestions and measures gathered from contributions of the scientific community, professionals from various sectors, and the general public.
On the other hand, and with a sense of urgency for the working group, they endorse proposals such as the ecological tax, a tourism freeze, regulations on property acquisitions by non-residents, and halting projects that contravene urban or environmental regulations. This petition will be formally submitted to the office of the President of the Government of the Canary Islands.
Lastly, they intend to motivate individuals “to persist in their personal and collective initiatives, continuing to occupy our spaces, our beaches, our land, as this is our home and the Canary Islands cannot endure endlessly.” They further emphasise that ‘Canarias Palante’ is an inclusive participatory initiative which has already garnered the support of 37 groups and remains open to further participants.
