The Government of the Canary Islands has been forced to close classrooms in nurseries for 0 to 3-year-olds due to a lack of substitute staff because the reserve lists have been exhausted.

The Councillor for Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Families, Candelaria Delgado, in a parliamentary committee, has stated that as a result, no entire school has ever closed and has specified that in Canarias, there are thirteen public nurseries, eight in Tenerife, one in La Palma, and four in Gran Canaria.

Due to many of the reserve lists being depleted, some dating back to 2007, authorization will be requested from the General Directorate of the Civil Service to launch a generic offer through the Canarian Employment Service to fill the positions.

Likewise, it has been specified that the first exercise for the nursery educator category took place last Saturday, April 20, on the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, with the aim of creating a new reserve list.

“We hope that by the end of this year, all the reserve lists will be formed and there will be no need to resort to generic employment offers again,” she added.
