WORKS TENERIFE | Urban Revamp in Tenerife: New Underpass and Entry/Exit Point

An underground passage at Barranco Ruiz with a new road to ease entry and exit from the neighbourhood without disrupting traffic on the North Motorway (TF–5) is the proposed solution by the Cabildo for access to the town of La Rambla. The aim is to eliminate “the accident-prone area that currently exists, both for cars and pedestrians,” explains Juan Ramos Reyes, Mayor of San Juan de la Rambla. The project will include landscaped areas, pedestrian crossings, and safe pick-up points for public transport.

Dámaso Arteaga, Island Roads CEO, presented the proposal to both the Rambla government group and representatives of the neighbourhood platform All with La Rambla. The demand from this collective, maintained over time, has been crucial in seeking a solution to this safety issue. “It is one of the neighbourhood demands that requires urgent attention and has been the focus of most meetings with the Tenerife Cabildo Roads department since the beginning of this term,” the mayor explained.

Arteaga Suárez committed “not to delay the works beyond the next financial year, when the tendering and subsequent execution is planned,” specifies Ramos Reyes. The mayor ensures they conveyed to the island councillor that “neither the residents nor us, as the local administration, are willing to further postpone the improvement of La Rambla’s safety, a problem that has been stuck for decades and is beginning to see a solution.”

To progress in this direction, the parties established a schedule of regular meetings to provide updates on the administrative and technical progress of the proposal. The goal is for all involved parties to be informed at all times of the file’s development in each of its phases, as communicated by the municipal government.

It was in July 2022 when the Cabildo discussed an underground passage as the solution for safe access from La Rambla to the TF–5 and to the bus stops located in the vicinity. Other key figures were involved: Pedro Martín and Ezequiel Domínguez, both currently in the island and municipal opposition.

In January 2022, the residents of La Rambla began demanding, through protests, a safe entry and exit route from the village that avoids the need to cross the road to reach the bus stop.
