Tenerife’s traffic congestion has made queues a common sight on the island. The current infrastructure for mobility falls short, necessitating the expansion of various routes to simplify the circulation for the residents of Tenerife.

The Government of the Canary Islands through the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, Pablo Rodríguez, has provided updates on the ongoing construction works in Tenerife. To address the “serious congestion issues” on the island, different locations are or will be affected by initiatives aimed at future enhancement.

Currently, two projects are underway in the southern region of Tenerife, while another one has already been awarded:

  • The Las Chafiras link, work in progress.
  • The section of the Insular Ring Road between Santiago del Teide and El Tanque, work in progress.
  • The false tunnel from Fañabé to Playa de Las Américas, awarded.

These three projects exceed a 400 million Euros investment, in addition to over 150 million Euros allocated for the next two projects that have drawn significant attention from Tenerife’s Island Council:

  • The third lane from Guamasa to Tenerife North Airport.
  • The third lane between San Isidro and Oroteanda.

The latter seems to be the next milestone in projects set to revolutionise mobility in Tenerife, alleviating traffic congestion in areas that have become bottlenecks.

According to the minister, the next project to be tendered will be the third lane on the Southern Motorway, aiming to broaden the route between San Isidro, in Granadilla de Abona, and Oroteanda, in San Miguel de Abona. This development will surpass 100 million Euros with the aim of enhancing traffic flow.

Northern Motorway

On the northern part of the island, the most pressing project for the Island Council is the third lane on TF-5, expanding the route between Tenerife North Airport and Guamasa. This specific location experiences bottleneck issues during peak hours, especially in the mornings.

The estimated cost of this project amounts to 55 million Euros. Despite its necessity, there is still a chance that it might not proceed as it is pending environmental evaluation.
