Mercadona, a chain of physical and online supermarkets, has delivered 42 tonnes of essential products to the Food Banks of Las Palmas and Tenerife thanks to the generosity of its “Jefes” (customers), who contributed monetarily while passing through the checkout during the Great Collection organized by the Spanish Federation of Food Banks last November.
Mercadona made its 86 supermarkets in Canarias available to the campaign, where customers could make monetary donations at the time of purchase, which were later converted into basic products selected by the Food Banks according to their actual needs. Specifically, the entities required items such as pasta, tomato sauce, rice, cereals, oil… that were delivered from Mercadona’s logistics warehouses in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
Additionally, the supermarket chain has added an additional 10% to the amount raised by customers, which has been transformed into Social Cards. This tool allows users to make their entire purchase, both fresh and dry goods, at the supermarket. The Food Banks of Gran Canaria and Tenerife will distribute them among their beneficiary entities so that they reach vulnerable families on the islands.

Pedro Llorca, president of the Food Bank of Las Palmas, expresses his gratitude for “the monetary donation made by Mercadona’s customers during the Great Collection and the company’s collaboration in this initiative every year, in addition to the food donations they provide us with.”
Hernán Cerón, president of the Food Bank of Tenerife, “values Mercadona’s commitment and effort in the Great Collection, and thanks the company and its customers for their solidarity.”
Jose Castilla, Communication Director of the company in Canarias, states that it is a pride for the company to be able to collaborate by providing their human and logistical resources, while also appreciating the solidarity of their customers, as without them “it would not be possible, and we encourage them to continue collaborating in the upcoming virtual food collections that we support, considering it to be the most efficient way to meet the real needs of the final beneficiaries.”
Mercadona’s Donations in Canarias
One of Mercadona’s commitments to society is to share a part of what it receives from it. With this goal, the company’s Social Responsibility Plan is developed, which addresses the social and ethical component through various sustainable actions that strengthen its commitment to shared growth. As part of this policy, Mercadona collaborates with over 50 organizations and social entities in Canarias to which it delivered over 1,345 tonnes of food and essential products in 2023, equivalent to about 22,000 shopping carts.
