Latest updates on Sánchez’s letter

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 24th April. (EUROPA PRESS) –

David Toledo, the national secretary general of the Canarian Coalition Organization (CC), has expressed his astonishment at the decision of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to contemplate stepping down temporarily to assess an alleged legal attack on his wife, Begoña Gómez. Toledo labelled this decision as unprecedented in any well-established democracy.

In an audio message released to the press, the nationalist leader expressed his hope that President Sánchez will use this period of reflection to consider the personal criticisms he faces from right-wing and far-right sectors, and to evaluate his own behaviours towards political opponents without any hint of humility.

Toledo highlighted that the nationalists have long been raising concerns about the deteriorating political discourse in Madrid and in the Congress of Deputies, where personal attacks have become a daily occurrence. He asserted that Pedro Sánchez cannot portray himself as a victim while also behaving as an aggressor.

Although pointing out his dislike for personal attacks in politics, Toledo argued that the president and the Socialist Party are not in a position to complain about personal criticisms, as they are often guilty of the same behaviour against their rivals.

He also condemned the intrusion of personal matters into politics, citing the recent harassment faced by the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, at his family residence. While strongly condemning such actions, Toledo emphasised that maintaining civility and respecting the private lives of public figures should not be a matter of political alignment.
