The president of Tenerife’s Cabildo, Rosa Davila, emphasized on Wednesday the commitment to assist Granadilla City Council in reclaiming La Tejita by revoking the hotel’s license during a forthcoming meeting involving representatives from central and Canarian governments, the Cabildo, and the City Council scheduled for May 3.
Speaking on the RTVC program ‘From night to day’, as reported by EFE, Dávila stated that the island’s governing body “will extend support in all required forms, including financial assistance, to rectify the current situation, restore the area to its natural state, and repair the damage caused so far.”
The island’s president mentioned that the potential compensation amount would be subject to negotiation and the circumstances surrounding the owners, details she remains unaware of, highlighting that “it will be advisable” for all parties to reach a mutual agreement and have the compensation amount endorsed by the relevant authorities.
Dávila’s statements follow a call from Granadilla’s Mayor, Jennifer Miranda (PSOE), urging the central, regional, and island governments to convene a meeting this Monday to explore “a feasible resolution” ensuring the safeguarding of La Tejita beach.
As per the council, a deal had been struck between the developer and the former Canary Islands Government for the acquisition of the land where the hotel is being constructed. The construction works, paused in 2021, resumed in February this year.
The objective of acquiring this property was to “restore the natural state of this coastal area, highly crucial in terms of biodiversity, a move that was approved by its owners after the Department’s technicians evaluated its economic value,” as stated by the City Council in a release.
Presently, in response to the protests against the prevailing tourism model on 20A, environmental groups have demanded a halt to the ongoing construction works.
