SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 23rd April. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Francisco Linares, the general secretary of the Canarian Coalition in Tenerife, strongly criticized the ‘harassment’ targeting the president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, following the demonstrations on April 20.
Linares expressed his “full and complete” disapproval of such actions and urged political factions in the islands to denounce “the intimidation that Fernando Clavijo and his family are enduring.”
“While people have the right to protest, it is unethical to do so in an attempt to intimidate a public figure and his family in front of their residence, no matter how peaceful the intentions may seem,” Linares lamented in a statement.
“Such actions violate the rights to privacy and security of individuals, regardless of their apparently peaceful nature,” he reiterated.
He emphasised that the right to protest is “essential” in any democratic society, a principle firmly supported by his party.
However, he remarked, “while exercising this right, respect, tolerance, and legality must be upheld. ‘Harassment’ tactics, rather than facilitating public discourse, create an atmosphere of intimidation and conflict that only serves to undermine the foundational principles of democratic coexistence.”
