The President of Tenerife’s Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, announced on Tuesday the proposal to implement an eco-tax on the island specifically for tourists. This tax will be connected to access to protected natural areas, with a clear goal of using the proceeds for their preservation and upkeep.
“We see this as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of our land and natural spaces, showcasing their value and making them more visible to our visitors,” she told the press during a visit to the Guía de Isora treatment plant.
Vice President and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso, also voiced support for the eco-tax, stating that the funds generated will be directed towards enhancing the conservation efforts of these areas and improving the overall visitor experience.
“We will be presenting a proposal during this Friday’s plenary session to initiate a legal and financial analysis for the implementation of this tax. The revenue collected will then be utilised to enhance visitors’ experiences and support the conservation of Tenerife’s protected natural spaces,” he explained.
