The magnificent Corpus tapestry displays a more religious theme and focuses on the heavens

The Gates of Heaven is the title of the grand tapestry located in the Town Hall Square of La Orotava, whose sketch was presented yesterday by the carpet director, Domingo González Expósito, who explained that this year it has a more religious character. “The social themes depicted until now aimed to raise awareness about the human and global problems that were and are occurring at all times, but these issues have become routine, so few people are sensitized to them and very few take action to eradicate them,” he reflected.

The design reflects a unique tapestry that represents the sky with various colours and shades within an interweaving of eleven spaces formed by white lines (symbol of purity). In the central part lies the essence of faith and humanity; on one side, the Trinity formed by God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and on the other side, the essence of humanity represented as equals and finite; in the lower part of the centre, in the darkest area, there is a possibly invented flower and death as part of life.

Throughout the tapestry, which represents the sky, there are various different angels. It features a border of flowers representing the continuous offering that humans make to God. The Carpet includes two motifs that link it to next year’s: the flat silhouette of a half apple and the figure of an angel positioned outside the frame. Twelve natural colours from Teide will be used, as usual, and the Artearena team is responsible for creating this carpet under the direction of Domingo J. González Expósito.

The figures of the Trinity range from the seven meters in height of God the Father to the five meters of the representation of death. The two side angels measure 11 meters in height and the seven small angels range between 80 centimetres and five meters. Some of these will be created by the young carpet makers in the group. The flowers in the border range between six and three meters in height.

The Mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares, praised the magnificent work carried out by the carpet makers, who this year are already immersed in the creation of the grand tapestry under a large tent, the largest in history, which has been hired from professionals in the field to facilitate the work during the forty days that the process lasts.
