The Mayor of Granadilla Urges Other Administrations to Safeguard La Tejita

Calling upon the State, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Cabildo of Tenerife, Mayor Jennifer Miranda (PSOE) is convening a meeting to seek “a workable solution” to ensure the protection of La Tejita beach.

An ongoing project to construct a hotel on the beach has been the subject of requests by environmental groups to halt construction, some of whose members are currently on a hunger strike, and has led to tens of thousands of protesters during the 20A demonstrations.

The City Council disclosed that Miranda has dispatched letters today to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and the President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, with the purpose of “exploring possible joint solutions to the La Tejita hotel project.”

As per the City Council, there was an agreement between the developer and the previous Government of the Canary Islands, under the leadership of PSOE, to purchase the plot where the hotel is under construction. The construction works were halted in 2021 and resumed in February 2024.

The aim of acquiring the property was to “restore the natural state of this coastal area, highly significant from a biodiversity perspective, and the economic valuation by the Department’s experts had the owners’ approval,” stated the City Council.

Jennifer Miranda asserted, “We are at a pivotal moment to involve all public administrations in finding a feasible solution to ensure the protection of this coastal area.”

Through this approach, we can “translate words into actions,” the mayor remarked, referring to the stances of political leaders regarding the demands of the April 20 demonstration.
