More than a thousand people retraced yesterday in Granadilla de Abona the route that the Tenerife saint Pedro de San José de Betancur used to transfer the herds from the summit to the coast. This year, the Brother Pedro’s Camino had a new variant, from the town of Vilaflor de Chasna to the populated area of Charco del Pino, in Granadilla, following the recovery of a joint project between both municipalities of the old path that connected Vilaflor and Granadilla, providing more safety to the pilgrim by following a guided trail without road closures and through landscapes of great natural beauty. A trail that, at the same time, symbolizes the collective memory of the people in the southern region and which connects history, spirituality, landscape, and culture.

At 1,400 metres above sea level, the XVII edition of the Brother Pedro’s Camino Route began yesterday, as the dawn was breaking. At 06:00 hours, a liturgy was celebrated before the walk with the people gathered there, including members of both municipal councils.

After 07:00 hours, the route started from Vilaflor de Chasna with over five hundred participants, who were joined by more hikers and pilgrims from Granadilla, Charco del Pino, San Isidro, El Médano, and San Miguel de Abona. Since 2005, when the study for the recovery and revaluation of Brother Pedro’s Camino began, it has been a challenge for the Chasna region to recover a symbol of collective memory that has been maintained to this day thanks to the residents of Granadilla de Abona and Vilaflor de Chasna, to unite the different municipalities of the region (Fasnia, Arico, Granadilla de Abona, San Miguel de Abona, and Vilaflor de Chasna) and their population through the revaluation of a route that connects history, spirituality, landscape, and culture.
