The main streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife have been dyed yellow – the chosen color for the protest – from 11:30 am due to the demonstration scheduled for this Saturday, April 20, in all eight islands and various Spanish and European capitals under the slogan ‘Canary Islands have a limit’. The demands of the protesters are varied, from changing the island’s economic model – primarily based on tourism – to wealth redistribution, controlling housing prices, and protecting nature.

Among the banners, slogans like “Canaries are not for sale, they are loved and defended”, “where is the money from tourism?” or “tourism moratorium now” could be read. All this, amidst the sound of drums and conch shells. Yellow is not the only color present, but also the flags of the Archipelago, some with seven stars.

Protection of natural spaces

The protection of natural spaces is another of the most repeated demands. “No one wants to take on their environmental responsibilities, but they want to go where nature is abundant”, reads a huge banner. Nearby is Sebastián Gil, president of the Tenerife Mountaineering Federation, who stressed that the presence of his group is due to the demand for more control, education campaigns and surveillance in the natural spaces of the Canary Islands. “We demand more environmental education,” he warned. Regarding the various proclamations at the protest, he pointed out that there is “respect” and “coexistence” among all groups and citizens because ultimately, the goal is common: “Defending the territory”.

Public transport

Due to the demonstration, and until its conclusion, the bus lines 902, 904, 905, 912, and 914 will be diverted, with stops at Weyler, Plaza Militar, Capitanía, Parque García Sanabria, Méndez Núñez, El Pilar, Plaza del Príncipe, Villalba Hervás, La Alameda, Plaza Isabel II, La Marina, 25 de Julio, Buenos Aires, Manuel Hermoso Rojas, José Emilio García Gómez, La Salle, and La Salle School out of service.
