SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 19th April. (EUROPA PRESS) –
A decree was signed this Friday by the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, declaring a day of official mourning for the passing of the former mayor of the city, José Miguel García Gómez, who held office from 1991 to 1995.
As a gesture of respect and mourning for the former mayor’s memory, the flags in the capital district will be flown at half-mast from today until noon tomorrow.
In a statement, Bermúdez emphasized that “José Emilio was always dedicated to advocating for the progress of this beloved land, showing great commitment to his fellow citizens and having a visionary outlook for the city’s future.” He will be fondly remembered for these qualities.
The mayor expressed his condolences, along with those of the city, to the family and friends of José Emilio García Gómez.
José Emilio García Gómez, who passed away at the age of 81, assumed the role of Mayor of Santa Cruz in 1991, following his involvement in politics during the early years of democracy where he served as the first councilor and later as the first deputy mayor.
His tenure is credited with notable achievements, particularly in the promotion and development of the city in the Cabo Llanos area.
It was under his leadership that an agreement was reached to reclaim the land formerly owned by the Refinery, leading to the inception of the Cabo Llanos Plan. This territory was then integrated into the General Management Plan, which was also endorsed during his term.
The funeral service for the former mayor is scheduled to take place on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at the Santa Lastenia cemetery.
