SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 19th April. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Fernando Cortés, Urbaser’s Director for Treatment in Levante, Madrid, and the Canary Islands, voiced his support on Friday for a “shift in approach” towards waste management, highlighting the potential for generating “jobs and economic opportunities” in the Canary Islands through the advancement of the circular economy.

Speaking at the ‘Canary Islands towards the future’ forum organized by Europa Press, he stressed the need for placing the circular economy “at the core, not just as a concept but as a reality,” advocating for the creation of “synergies” within the company across different sectors.

Furthermore, he emphasised the importance of raising awareness among the public, stating that although Urbaser deals with waste management, the initial focus should be on reducing waste through “robust strategies.” “People need to be educated,” she added.

Cortés firmly stated that the current waste disposal system is “unsustainable” environmentally and in terms of land consumption. He highlighted the significance of decreasing waste generation and increasing selective collection to 80%, promoting collaboration between the public and private sectors, as well as research and development initiatives in partnership with universities.

He advocated for the reuse of materials within facilities and conducting “minor repairs” to reintroduce them into the market. He acknowledged that “technological advancements are pivotal” for driving the required change.

Cortés mentioned the integration of artificial intelligence tools, vehicle modifications, smart containers, and logistical enhancements within the company. He stressed the importance of enhancing waste traceability and ensuring public visibility into their actions.

Additionally, he mentioned the company’s efforts in producing alternative fuels from the landfill and highlighted the necessity of public-private collaborations to advance the circular economy. He cited projects with the Cabildo of Tenerife amounting to nine million Euros over the next four years as an example of this collaboration.
