SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 17th April. (EUROPA PRESS) –
A medical response team arrived on Tuesday night to assist one of the ‘Canarias Se Agota’ hunger strike participants suffering from severe hypoglycemia after six days without food.
The group has informed that the individual in need was successfully stabilised, and emphasized that medical support will be more frequent at La Concepción de La Laguna square, where they have set up camp for their protests, as the hunger strike continues.
‘Canarias Se Agota’ criticises the lack of concern shown by the regional government and President Fernando Clavijo towards the health of the hunger strikers. They pointed out the absence of measures such as a tourism moratorium, the organisation of compulsory assemblies, or the halting of the Tejita hotel and the Cuna del Alma mega-project in his agenda.
The collective believes that the Government, as the head of social organisation, should ensure the well-being of its citizens and promote dialogue to address their demands and necessities in such a perilous situation as a hunger strike. Clavijo’s continued silence is seen as a failure to fulfil this responsibility.
Despite numerous politicians advocating for a peaceful dialogue, the hunger strikers are left without the opportunity for such discussions.
The camp participants have given the Government a ten-day ultimatum to listen to their demands. The support for their cause is growing, but after more than 160 hours, six individuals are still fasting. “Although our bodies are weakening, our determination remains unshaken. We will persist until our objective is achieved, which is simply the hope of a better future for the already exhausted Canary Islands,” they declared.
