Capturing of 52 Kilograms of Illegally Caught Fish by Civil Guard in Tenerife

The confiscation of 52 kilos of fish caught illegally by three crew members of a leisure boat sailing between Los Gigantes in Tenerife and La Gomera island has been executed by the Civil Guard.

The vessel was discovered during a collaborative operation between the Provincial Maritime Service of the Civil Guard and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food’s Fisheries Inspection Service for monitoring fishing and navigation activities, as announced in a statement by the armed force on Tuesday.

The three crew members of the aforementioned boat were caught fishing illegally by the agents of this operation. Upon inspection, 52 kilos of illegally caught fish were found on the boat, exceeding the maximum permitted weight per person per day according to the Canary Islands Fishing Law.

Additionally, during another operation, agents from both units identified a leisure boat using unmarked fishing equipment while anchored in an authorised area, violating regulations. As a result, four “drums,” a type of fishing gear used to trap moray eels without proper signage, were confiscated.

The Civil Guard mentions that some moray eels were found trapped inside the confiscated drum, which were subsequently released back into the sea by the agents.

During both operations, the offenders were notified of administrative complaints under the Fisheries Law for the respective violations, with fines ranging from 60 to 300 euros for minor infractions and from 301 to 60,000 euros for serious violations.
