The students from the Canary Islands have achieved a remarkable feat in the SpainSkills 2024 competition, garnering an impressive total of five medals – one gold, two silvers, and two bronzes. The closing ceremony took place in Madrid on Saturday, presided over by Ainhoa Molina, the Director General of Vocational Training and Special Regime Education.

The gold medal was secured by Guayre Antonio Martínez Cosano, a Pharmacy and Parapharmacy student at the Integrated Vocational Training Centre Majada Marcial in Fuerteventura, in the exhibition category.

In the competitive categories, students from the Canary Islands achieved four medals. Two silver medals were earned by Culinary Arts student Antonio Israel Domínguez García from the Faro de Maspalomas High School in Gran Canaria, and by Paula Schiera Martín in Fashion Technology from CIFP Las Indias in Tenerife. The two bronze medals were awarded to Daniela Victoria Brito Afonso from IES Geneto for Carpentry and to Andrea Napoli from CIFP Virgen de Candelaria for Plumbing and Heating, both located in Tenerife.

Last week, the Minister for Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity, and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, Poli Suárez, congratulated the successful students. During the official reception for the Canary Islands team at SpainSkills 2024, he expressed the intent to propose that the archipelago hosts a future edition of the national vocational skills competition, SpainSkills, or even the European (EuroSkills) or World (WorldSkills) phases.

“We need to bridge the gap and show the world that the Canary Islands are not just 2,000 kilometers away from Madrid, that we are more than just a sun and beach destination, and that there is vast potential here,” stated the minister.

The Canary Islands delegation, the largest in the history of this event organized by the Ministry to promote Vocational Training, consisted of around thirty teachers and students representing a variety of vocational fields who had won gold at the regional Canarias Skills 2023 competition.

Vocational Training is a significant focus for the current Government of the Canary Islands, which recently unveiled its new Insular Vocational Training Map.

Of the participating Canary Islands students, seventeen were from Tenerife, thirteen from Gran Canaria, and four each from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Nine centres were located in Tenerife, nine in Gran Canaria, one in Lanzarote, and one in Fuerteventura.

Specifically, students hailed from various Vocational Training Centres and High Schools across the Canary Islands, such as CIFP Virgen de Candelaria, Zonzamas, San Cristóbal, Las Indias, Majada Marcial, Cesar Manrique, and from the High Schools Tacoronte, Óscar Domínguez, Amurga, El Rincón, Arucas Domingo Rivero, Geneto, Mencey Bencomo, Las Galletas, La Minilla, Faro De Maspalomas, José Zerpa, Mencey Bencomo, Ingenio, Puerto de la Cruz Telesforo Bravo, Lomo La Herradura, along with the Private Centre for Infant, Primary, and Secondary Education San Juan Bosco.

The Canary Islands delegation competed in various skill categories at the national event, including mechatronics, CNC milling, welding, bodywork repair, plumbing and heating, electronics, web development, electrical installations, industrial control, carpentry, joinery, floristry, hairdressing, beauty therapy, fashion technology, automotive technology, culinary arts, restaurant and bar service, automotive painting, landscape gardening, refrigeration and air conditioning, network systems administration, healthcare assistance, visual merchandising, bakery, 3D animation and games, and hotel reception.
