A Celebration of Youth Talent at the Cervantes Festivities

The youth of La Orotava will take centre stage between this month and May during the Cervantes Festivities. The Town Hall of the village hosted the presentation of the event’s schedule and poster, highlighting the enormous potential of the younger generations to develop the creative abilities that flourished during the Spanish Golden Age and pass on that legacy. Once again, the cultural association Alisios Encuentro Canarias-América and the Town Hall have collaborated on creating the programme.

Various activities will take place in educational centres, such as a poster competition on Golden Age literature; a conference titled “El bálsamo de Fierabrás de la lectura para una juventud de Quijotes” by writer and university professor José María Espinar; and theatrical performances at the local high schools by the amateur group Somos Puro Teatro. Theatre will also play a significant role with the children’s play “Adivina, adivinanza ¿Don Quijote y Sancho Panza? Canta y cuenta con Güicho” and the family session “El contar del Mío Cid” by the Los Realejos Theatre School.

Once again, the Cervantes Festivities will give a voice to the citizens of La Orotava, inviting them to participate in the reading of the pinnacle of Spanish literature, a tradition held on the 23rd to celebrate the Day of the Book, established to commemorate the date of Miguel de Cervantes’ passing. The activity will take place at the Town Hall’s Salón Noble, starting with readings by members of the municipal corporation and students from local schools. In the afternoon, from 16:00 to 19:00, various civic groups and associations of seniors from La Orotava will prepare specific chapters of the Quixote’s adventures.

The programme will also include lectures on the 19th of this month and the 11th and 16th of May at the town halls, focusing on the origins of Canary culture.
