CCOO and UGT denounce that, after three years at the helm of Post, “The resounding failure of the administration of President Juan Manuel Serrano has been demonstrated, with almost 500 million losses in that period and 7,000 fewer jobs due to the drop in activity.”

For the unions it is “a scrapping plan with the closure of centers and transfer of activity and employment to Correos Express and other subsidiaries.” Summary: “Personal, political and business interests prevail over general citizenship”. Both organizations ask the Government “to take the reins and address the debate on a public postal model with funding and guarantees for social and territorial cohesion.”

CCOO and UGT believe that “within the framework of a consensus on the public postal model, the negotiation of a new Multi-Year Agreement should be promoted, which improves the current Collective Agreement and ends the devaluation of wages, employment and rights.”

“Prioritizing CorreosExpress will cause many delays at Christmas”

Pedro Segura – CCOO Post Office in Tenerife

Last spring there was a process of mobilizations against “the dismantling”, but the first actions on the island date back to November 2020. Against that «scrapping plan that seeks to dismantle the public postal service and the public operator, Correos, which provides it. A productive and management reconversion that abandons the postal sector to become a pure logistics operator ”.

For CCOO and UGT “the model implies an unprecedented precariousness and devaluation of labor relations through cutbacks, part-time contracts, lost wages, illegal shift changes …”. All of this “reverts to the quality of services for citizens.”

It should be remembered that in Tenerife, amid the restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic, a large caravan of vehicles took place in Santa Cruz to reject the policies of the Post Office. In addition to institutional actions such as the approval in the municipal plenary sessions of motions against the cut. Or of a Proposal No of Law in the heart of the Parliament of the Canary Islands last June.

Union sources suggest that «In Tenerife, since last February, CorreosExpress, a subsidiary company with difficult working conditions, has established itself at the Taco Automated Treatment Center (CTA), the post office in our province ». They explain that “priority is given to these shipments to those of the Post Office, which creates very important delays, which, in the face of the imminent Christmas campaign, will be much more accentuated.” In addition, they add, “pilot tests have been promoted in mailrooms in Puerto de la Cruz and Taco-Barranco Grande that have caused a real health problem for the workers of these specific units.” To this must be added “some accumulated that the public will soon begin to notice in the service.”

From CCOO and UGT consider that the latter “is another example of the disaster of the Post Office managers in Tenerife and the Canary Islands.” Or the fact that “Arona’s is in the lead among the worst units in the country.” They conclude: «It is no coincidence that it is our province that always holds the first position in the negative; This is how the citizens are already noticing it and it will increase in the difficult Christmas campaign that begins ».
