The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will initiate the bidding process for a project that will bring about a personal mobility network in the city centre, featuring a new cycle lane to encourage the use of electric bicycles and scooters. The construction works are expected to span six months upon approval.

This network will span a total of 18.77 kilometres (16.05 km of designated cycling streets and 2.17 km of cycle lanes) and is allocated a budget of close to €1.7 million, supported by funds from the European Next Generation initiative.

The initiative will also incorporate new parking spaces designed specifically for bicycles and scooters. These areas will include U-shaped structures with the capacity to accommodate 10 to 20 personal mobility vehicles, which can be managed through a dedicated mobile application for charging, as well as dedicated space for helmets.

Last Friday, the Councilors of Public Services and Mobility, Carlos Tarife and Evelyn Alonso, engaged with residents and local business owners in the city centre to discuss the forthcoming personal mobility network implementation.

The Councilor for Public Services, Environmental Sustainability, and Strategic Planning, Carlos Tarife, emphasized that “this ambitious project aims to reduce pollution and enhance the quality of life for residents, businesses, and users of the network.”

The Mayor highlighted that “this space will provide a comfortable environment that enables diverse modes of transportation, where certain streets will be shared by personal mobility vehicles and cars, while others will be exclusive to personal mobility vehicles, all with maximum safety and accessibility assured.

Furthermore, the Councilor, along with Public Services officials, outlined the signalling plans for the changes and expressed readiness to engage with Santa Cruz residents to address any queries or uncertainties that may arise during the network’s implementation that will revolutionize and enhance urban mobility.”

On the other hand, the Councilor for Mobility, Evelyn Alonso, mentioned that “workshops and information campaigns will be conducted across the five districts to promote the responsible and safe use of bicycles and scooters, further supporting the ongoing efforts towards a Low Emissions Zone.”
