Recent findings from an anthropometric study conducted by Dr. Javier González Pérez, the municipal sports doctor, unveiled an increase in body fat among children aged between 6 and 12, compared to three decades ago. The study was presented during the I Health Week of Puerto de la Cruz.
The presentation, held at the Plenary Hall of the City Council, included growth charts and indices reflecting the weight status of boys and girls assessed in five schools in the city. These findings were then compared to data from 1990 to provide insights into the growth and development of young individuals in Porto.
The primary goal of this research is to evaluate the progress of children in the municipality “to achieve optimum results in the years ahead and enhance the well-being of citizens, particularly the youth,” stated Dr. González. He emphasised that this anthropometric evaluation indicates the current scenario while identifying changes in dietary habits, family structures, economic factors, educational standards, and cultural aspects that have influenced society. These findings will serve as a guide for future initiatives.
Alberto Cabo, the Councilor for Sports, mentioned that “having this comprehensive overview serves as a solid foundation for health stakeholders in Puerto de la Cruz to collaborate on implementing targeted policies for this demographic, thereby positively impacting the current and future health of the residents.”
“The department made a commitment during the previous term to continue promoting health strategies, aligning with the Health Promotion and Prevention Strategy of the National Health System. Our aim for this term is to establish an Intersectoral Forum and a Municipal Health Council, alongside developing the First Municipal Health Plan 2025-2029,” he further added.
