Early Wednesday morning was eventful on the coast of Gran Canaria due to the coastal phenomena alert, caused by strong winds in the Canary Islands. The rough seas have caused coastal flooding in several locations in both Gran Canaria and Tenerife, as reported by the 112 emergency services.
The main incident occurred in the San Cristóbal neighbourhood in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where the sea surge has caused multiple damages along the promenade, as shared on the official X Twitter account of the city’s Local Police, who posted a video showing residents collecting debris brought in by the waves.

In Tenerife, the rough sea conditions combined with high tide have necessitated the evacuation of 17 homes with around 40 people in the coastal areas of El Rosario, Candelaria, Arafo, and Arico, but no injuries reported.
Furthermore, the Tenerife Fire Brigade intervened in the beach area of El Socorro, in the municipality of Güímar, to recover several vehicles ahead of the incoming seawater.
Security and emergency services continue to operate in these areas, urging the public to avoid risks on the coast.

It is important not to position oneself at the end of piers or breakwaters, or risk taking photographs or videos close to where the waves break. Additionally, it is not advisable to travel on roads near the shoreline, or engage in sports and recreational activities near the coast, such as fishing, until the situation is back to normal.
